Al-Ahlia Cement Company
Established in 1961, the National Cement Joint Stock Company saw its inception in Tripoli. With its headquarters now located in Al Khoums, it can be found approximately 120 km outside of Tripoli, to the east of the city.
It began with the establishment of Libya’s first cement factory. Production at the first Khums cement factory commenced in 1968. At the time, it had a design production capacity of 100 000 tons of cement per annum.
Production was stepped up in 1974, with an increased design capacity reaching 330 000 tons of cement per annum. Production expanded with:
- Al-Marqeb cement factory
- Souk Al-Khamis complex producing cement and building products
- Lebda cement factory
- Zliten cement factory
- Gypsum factory
- Paper bag factory
In affiliation with the Souk Al-Khamis Company for Cement and Building Products, progressive development saw the successful commencement of the lime factory in 1976. It started with a design production capacity of 100,000 tons per annum. This success was quickly followed by the Souk Al-Khamis Cement Factory gearing up to a design production capacity of one million tons of cement per annum, in 1977.
In the same year, the name of the National Cement Company was changed to the National Company for Cement and Building Materials, with their headquarters established in the city of Khums.
A merger soon followed that blended several prominent cement production facilities:
- The National Company for Cement and Building Materials
- The Souk Al-Khamis Company for Cement and Building Materials
- The Zliten cement factory
